ADF – Automatic Document Feeder

Usually used to describe how a scanner takes several pages and feeds them one at a time (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_document_feeder)

API  - Application Programming Interface

         A programming interface

BPM – Business Process Management

A management approach focused on aligning all aspects of an organisation with the wants and needs of clients

CDF – Continuous Document Feeder

Usually used to describe a scanner that allows the user to insert one page after another

CCD – Charge Coupled Device

         CCD’s can be used in scanners to capture an image.


COLD  - Computer Output to Laser Device



Is a system for archiving data such as business records and reports to one or more optical disks in a compressed but easily retrievable format



DM(S) – Document Management (System/Software)



A term used to describe software (or a computer system) used to track and store electronic documents



DI -   Document Imaging



Document imaging is a form of enterprise content management. In the early days of content management technologies, the term "document imaging" was used interchangeably with "document image management" as the industry tried to separate itself from the micrographic and reprographic technologies.



DPI – Dots Per Inch

         A measure of printing and scanning resolution

DRP – Disaster Recovery Plan



Is the process, policies and procedures related to preparing for recovery or continuation of technology infrastructure critical to an organisation

ECM – Enterprise Content Management



Is a formalized means of organizing and storing an organization's documents, and other content, that relate to the organization's processes. Many will have other views on this but for safety I’ve used Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enterprise_content_management)



FTP - File Transfer Protocol



         A standard network protocol used to transfer files for TCP based networks.



GUI - Graphical User Interface

         A user interface

ICR – Intelligent Character Recognition

         Used to automatically recognise handwriting

IPM – images per minute

         The number of images (front and back) that a scanner can scan in a minute

ISIS – image & scanner interface specification (Driver)

An industry standard interface for running scanners which was developed by Pixel Translations in 1990 (now EMC)

LOB – Line of Business



         Normally used to describe a vertical specific application like Finance or HR



MFP – Multifunction Printer



         Usually used to describe a printer or photocopier that can print, copy and scan



MTIFF – Multi-page Tagged Image File Format

         Same as TIFF below but a Multi-page format

OCR – Optical Character Recognition

         Used to automatically recognise printed characters

OMR – Optical Mark Recognition

         Also called mark sense, this technology can read ticks in a box

PDF – Portable Document Format

Originally an Adobe proprietary format, PDF is now an open srtandard used to represent documents in a manner independent of the application software, hardware or operating system (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portable_Document_Format)

PPM – Pages Per Minute

         Normally refers to the speed of a device like a scanner or printer

TIFF - Tagged Image File Format



         A file format for storage images (individually)



TWAIN – Technology Without An Interesting Name (Driver)

A standard software protocol and applications programming interface (API) that regulates communication between software applications and imaging devices such as scanners and digital cameras, soime manufacturers have their own version of TWAIN

WIA – Windows Image Acquisition (Driver)

WIA; sometimes also called Windows Imaging Architecture) is a Microsoft driver model and application programming interface (API) for Microsoft Windows Me and later Windows operating systems that enables graphics software to communicate with imaging hardware such as scanners, digital cameras and Digital Video-equipment. VRS – Virtual ReScan (enhance images/words)

         Is an image enhancement software developed and owned by Kofax
